June 1, 2016 – Santa Barbara Kiwanis. Introducing my forthcoming 3-volume set of books entitled “Dead Serious and Lighthearted: The Memorable Words of Modern America (1957-2015).  The books address the subject that American history is poorly taught and rarely learned and, worse yet, that there is a growing sense that history — even our own nation’s history — is, at best, a matter of hobby and curiosity; at worst, irrelevant in and to our modern world. There are many reasons for this dangerous diminishing of the importance of history — the ready availability of Google-data and other technological changes, the impact of globalization, the pressures and habits of brevity, the acceleration of events, the belief that history is merely the recitation of compromised and agenda-driven narratives of writers, and  – lastly – the failure of some to fully appreciate how the events of our history are themselves the threads which bind our country together as a national community.

February 18, 2015 – Santa Barbara Kiwanis – Speech Entitled “Winter Money and Trucks Dogs” – A non-political overview of the manner and extent to which America may still be failing to address the delicate subject of income and wealth inequality.
